Chuckanut Sandstone Writers Theater Open Mic with Special Guest: Haiku Northwest
Tuesday, June 10, 2025 (6:00 PM - 7:00 PM) (PDT)
Description
Please welcome special guests, members of Seattle's Haiku Northwest, who will be joining us to read from their new anthology, Glimmering Hour.
Haiku Northwest was founded in 1988 by Francine Porad. The friendly group loves to share and discuss haiku and related poetry, including senryu, haibun, haiga, tanka, and linked forms such as renku and rengay. They hold monthly meetings in the Seattle area on the second Thursday evening of most months, plus quarterly weekend meetings, typically host an annual meeting in late spring, and gather for the annual Seabeck Haiku Getaway in October. They also publish occasional member anthologies, sponsor the annual Porad Haiku Award, and more. And they would love to have you join , especially if you're new to haiku! To get involved, check out the Events page. Please also join the Mailchimp email list (about two or three messages per month, including meeting announcements). If you have questions, please email haikunw1988@gmail.com.
Chuckanut Sandstone Writers Theater (CSWT) Open Mic is held at Village Books, usually on the second Tuesday of the month from 6-8 PM Pacific time. Everyone is welcome to read their own original writings (poems, prose, essays, plays) for 1 to 7 minutes to an enthusiastic audience. Pre-registration to read is encouraged as spaces are limited, please email Carla Shafer at chuckanutsandstone@gmail.com to secure your spot! Walk-ins may sign in at the door to read if time allows. Our CSWT emcee is Carla Shafer, who founded Bellingham’s first continuous Open Mic in Bellingham in 1991. The Chuckanut Sandstone Writers Theater is named after the local rock which looks hard at first, but breaks open easily and like all great writing has grit.
Carla Shafer is a retired educator. She is a writer, editor, and publisher who supports writers getting to be heard and has published several anthologies of regional poets. She co-founded World Peace Poets in 2015 which has annual gatherings for writers and musicians and sponsors a Peace Poetry Postcard exchange every February. Her poems appear in the anthologies: Last Call, Noisy Waters, For Love of Orcas and Sue C. Boynton Poetry Contest. Carla has several chapbooks, including, Remembering the Path (2014).
